So in all my 26 years of life ( I know the dramatics) I have never been to Trinidad for carnival. Every year that I would see the pictures or hear the stories I would feel left out. Not being able to experience something that is apart of my culture, in the country where it originated from would really eat me up inside. I made the decision in 2019 that 2020 would be the year that I go to Trinidad for carnival. After the experience that I had playing in Miami in October I looked forward to my Trinidad carnival being a form of redemption ( no pressure right ?).

Planning for Trinidad carnival started early and while I had assistance from family and friends that were veteran carnival goers, it still took a lot of organizing. Financially it is not a cheap trip but after attending this year I feel as though it was worth every dollar. I enjoyed carnival so much that I have already decided to purchase my ticket for next year. My experience was very special to me being that I grew up surrounded in this culture, both parents being Trinidadian and exposing my sisters and I to our culture from a very young age. Being in the country that I’ve heard many stories about was such an amazing feeling, it’s difficult to put into words. My mother attended carnival this year as well after not being in her country since 1989. She was beyond thrilled to be back to her roots and it made me happy to see her having fun.

I’ve included here a vlog from my YouTube channel that basically summarizes my experience, hope you enjoy!
